Tech Neck

It's the most magical time of the year!

I can't believe the kids are back to school. Summer passed so quickly! I hope you made the most of it.

This year I thought I would spare you my typical back pack safety tips. Although, if you do need a refresher, the Ontario Chiropractic Association Pack it Light. Wear it Right campaign has a lot of good resources. Or check out the blog post I wrote for the Holistic Parent, When School is Literally a Pain in the Neck (and Back).

This newsletter will focus on "Tech Neck" specifically among children. I am sure you have seen those kids (they might even be yours!), almost folded in half playing on phones or tablets. Technology use is on the rise in every segment of the population, including children.      I am sure I do not have to argue the merits of good posture with any of you. Most of you understand the value of a healthy spine and your children receive regular chiropractic adjustments.

I am not suggesting you have your children walk around balancing a book on their head, but it is important that they are conscience of how they stand and sit. Many instances of neck and back pain in adults can be linked to injuries sustained during childhood and adolescents. As well, good posture (and also bad posture), will carry on into adulthood.

Here are a few tips for reducing "Tech Neck" and improving posture:

  • Sit up straight! Your ear should line up with your shoulder.

  • While sitting, put your head up and back against the back of the chair.

  • Hold your phone or tablet at eye level.

  • Move around every 30 minutes to let your body relax.

  • Bend back a few times to stretch your muscles and help them relax.

  • Engage in core exercises. Try yoga for kids or try a few of these core exercises adapted for children.

  • Reduce screen.

And if all else fails, do what our parents did.......send them outside to play!

Cheers!

Dr. Isabel
