After reading our previous post, Thirst Is Your Guide, are you still worried you aren't drinking enough water or fluids?
If you have not read Thirst Is Your Guide, have a quick read so you can determine how much you actually need to drink to be hydrated.
Below are my top 10 tips to drink more water. Which is your favourite? Comment below.
The 10 Best Tips For Drinking More Water
1. Add some excitement to your plain water! Try adding a little fruit juice, small pieces of fruit, and or herbs (mint and lavender are popular!).
2. Record how much water you are drinking. There are free apps available like Water Coach or Waterlogged that can help track your intake and send you reminders to stay hydrated. Or make a tick chart, like this, and record your daily intake.
3. Get yourself a really nice reusable bottle (or decorate your own). Make sure you like it so that you will actually use it and bring it with you everywhere you go. If you have water with you, all the time, you are more likely to sip throughout the day – while you are sitting in traffic, working at your desk, or catching up on Netflix. Just keep it within view and within arms reach.
4. Eat your fluids. Up to 30% of our fluid intake comes from the food we consume. Foods with high water content such as watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe and cucumber can be cut up in the fridge to snack on throughout the day.
5. Get yourself a cool reusable straw or a bottle with a sip filter so you can sip water throughout the day.
6. Try something different! Did you know water comes in different types? You are probably aware water can be spring, mineral, sparkling or flavoured, but have you tried coconut water, rice water, maple water or almond water?
7. Create reminders. You can set a reminder on your phone to beep when you should have a glass of water. Or design your own water bottle with reminders or you can purchase a bottle already labelled. For example, if your goal is 4 cups of water per day, aim to drink 1 cup of water by 9am, 12noon, 3pm and 6pm.
8. Keep a full glass or water close by. If you see water sitting in front of you already, you are more likely to continue drinking.
9. Create a set of rules for yourself. For example, I cannot have my coffee until a have a glass of water.
10. Make a habit of drinking water before or after your regularly scheduled activities. For example, have a glass of water when you first wake up, while your coffee is brewing, after brushing your teeth, before your leave your house, when you get to work, before you go to lunch, after you use the bathroom and / or before bed.
Which is your favourite?
#1 is one of my favourites. I enjoy adding lemon and lime slices to my water. I have also experimented with strawberries, watermelon and grapes.
